The Federal Clean Water Act and the Pennsylvania Clean Streams law require wastewater treatment facilities to have a permit establishing pollution limits, monitoring and reporting requirements.

National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits regulate household and industrial wastes that are collected in sewers and treated at municipal wastewater treatment plants. More than 200,000 sources are regulated by NPDES permits nationwide.

The Borough of Quakertown Wastewater Treatment Facility is permitted by and follows the NPDES rules for wastewater treatment.

More information about the NPDES system can be found at the Pennsylvania NPDES website at http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/waterops/redesign/subpages/npdes.htm
