Quakertown Borough is proud to be one of the 28 American Municipal Power (AMP) members participating in the Behind-the-Meter (BTM) Peaking Project.

The Behind-the-Meter generation project was developed by the American Municipal Power, Inc. to help participating AMP member communities lower their overall transmission cost and provide back-up generation sources.

AMP has partnered with PowerSecure who performs the engineering, procurement and construction for the installations and provides the operation and maintenance of the peak shaving units.

BTM generation provides local generation behind the utility’s meter — resulting in reduced system peaks that reduces costs for the municipal utility’s customers. BTM lowers transmission obligation because the generation is local and not delivered over transmission lines, so the community is able to avoid some transmission costs. In addition, the installations provide the added benefit of providing a source of emergency backup generation should a major outage occur, and the host communities are trained in how to use the units for that purpose.

About Our Site

DSC_6750

Our 10.8 kW generating system is located at the Electric Substation which is located in the Park at 4th. In fact, out of the 28 AMP member communities participating, our system is one of the largest sites to be installed thus far.

The Borough of Quakertown is fortunate and excited to have this system for our community. This project not only provides peak shaving, demand response, lower capacity, and demand charges but also provides a “backup” system to our electric grid in the event of a catastrophic event.

"It’s a wonderful thing for our town. This Behind-the-Meter Generation gives us the ability to seamlessly provide power. So, it is quite an advantage."
