In 2015 the Quakertown Borough Police Department in conjunction with the Quakertown Community School District created the position of a School Resource Officer (SRO). The motivating drive was a need for a police officer to serve at the high school and the department received a grant from the Department of Education to support this position. In 2016 the position was expanded for the SRO to have jurisdiction in all ten schools in the district and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed allowing the SRO to have jurisdiction in Milford, Richland, and Trumbauersville communities.

A SRO is a specially trained police officer that provides a multitude of responsibilities which include providing a safe school environment, fostering positive relationships with youth, providing valuable resources, developing strategies to resolve problems affecting youth, and teaching in the classrooms. The National Association School Resource Officer promotes a “triad concept” that a SRO is an informal counselor/mentor, educator, and law enforcement officer.

The SRO has been trained in basic and advanced courses to become certified through National Association School Resource Officers (NASRO). The SRO has completed Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) a course to inspect the safety of buildings to improve security and reduce the fear of crime. The SRO is a certified instructor for lock down procedures through (ALICE) which stands for Alert Lockdown Inform Counter and Evacuate. The SRO has been trained in Crisis Intervention to effectively deal with all aspects of mental health.

Currently Officer Robert Lee is assigned as the SRO and has an office at the high school. Officer Lee also runs the Quakertown First Responders Explorer Post, Youth Aid Panel, Community Accountability Panel, and Shop with a Cop.
